Ready for an unsolicited downer? Okay! I had a conversation yesterday about the proposed sulfide mine up in the Iron Range right next to the Boundary Waters. Bad on its face, right? Nasty. Turns groundwater orange. Let’s create jobs another way, right? But consider this: if we’re not willing to stop using phones and computers, we need what they’re mining. Odds are very good that if it’s not mined in countries like ours where its regulated, it will happen in developing countries where there’s virtually no regulation. Tacitly endorse apocalyptic pollution on the other side of the world, or work to regulate it here? Happy Friday!
